If you could make one anime mandatory for all humans to watch, what would it be?

The only anime that I think people of all tastes and even non-anime watchers might like would be —

Grave of the fireflies

Keijo. And why a second season never came out? Life is unfair.

Now that's a anime I can really get behind.

Honestly not to be boring but I'd pick Spirited Away because I think everyone would like it honestly.

I agree that Spirited Away is great. I would even say it's a masterpiece. But I think everyone has different tastes and so while I would choose Spirited Away, it would actually be because I don't want to force others to lose too much time to something they might not like.

Although this is only if I absolutely had to pick an anime. If I had a choice to say they don't have to watch anything, then I think that would be my answer

Absolutely there definitely will be people who won't like it but I think its super accessible, beautiful, and a great story that could resonate with anyone. Even people I know who don't really like anuime tend to like this one :)

I would say One Piece but many don't have the attention span for it these days. And rather than pick one maybe there has to be one per genre and everyone can pick their genre since everyone has their preference.

Those who say Gintama are way out there because Gintama requires a good understanding of anime and Japanese culture to understand a lot of the jokes/parodies. So it's not a good mandatory one for let's say someone new to anime or a casual watcher.

About Gintama I agree. Although I like it so much, not everyone can watch and enjoy it.

At first it was very hit and miss for me. I even dropped it close to episode 90 when it got to a point of too much potty humor. I'm not a fan of potty humor at all so all those moments turned me off from the show but I enjoyed the other parody and funny/witty moments and then the serious moments. After a couple years I believe, I continued watching and started enjoying Gintama a lot more around episode 100. But at the time I watched it I've already seen 500+ anime.

Madoka Magica. And most people who've known me for more than half a year have seen it, all liked it, and a good chunk started watching anime with me.
Really gets people to appreciate the artistic side of things.

Monogatari would be a second choice, because it is a brilliant, beautiful, layered and complete story. And full of good lines and lessons, if you can look past the pervert shit (which I do still love).

In terms of manga, Houseki no Kuni (because the adaptation was cut short) and Oyasumi Punpun (no idea where anybody would even start adapting this one) should both be mandatory reading.
Classic literature might teach you some things about people, if you're willing to suffer through countless pages of meaningless fluff and consult a teacher, who's spent years of higher education to bore you with it. Or, you can read these and actually learn something on your own. Both have as much depth as you're willing to dig for, while still being written to engage and entertain regular human beings.

I'd say it's a toss up for me between enlightening the masses with Monogatari or Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu
Both would have a profound impact on the souls of most viewers, however the nuances would differ ever so slightly between the two

I'd be glad to hear others thoughts and their reasons behind them, could there be a anime out there that would change the world if everyone had watched it?
the vast vast majority would then be turned off of anime altogether and lose even more respect for the medium. I don't see how this is valid and trust me, I'm a massive Monogatari fan and highly respect LoGH for what it seems to be.

I'd personally just put ppl on KnY/JJK/AoT cuz it seems to pander well to your average viewer and would get the most people at least partly into anime, compared to most other shows.

edit: I guess my choice does kind of rely on the principle that I'd wanna just get more ppl into anime, so there *is* that...

It's not about getting people to be fans, It's about sending a message

also the average person will watch star wars, there's no reason why star wars can't be replaced with LoGH
if logh was at the same level of international fame as star wars we might have a good civilization

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood or Attack on Titan. Those shows just have everything going for them. Good story, great characters, entertainment value without being stereotypically 'anime' as non anime fans say

3-Gatsu no Lion, I think it shows the struggles of life and the spirit to overcome them all too perfectly. No melodrama, no bs just 44 episodes of people changing or adapting to make their lives better.

If you showed Euphoria to everyone, there's bound to be some who like it out of the billions among us

could make the world a more interesting place, hmm.

Why would you want people to avoid anime if you yourself enjoy it?

As for me, Dragon Ball Z.

Shojo kakumei utena, truly a beautiful show that not a lot of people talk about. But you got to be interested in gays and feminism to enjoy the anime, so it's not for everyone I guess.
Madoka or Kill la Kill, it's easy to watch.
